To increase the distribution of our models the program executables for DYRESM and CAEDYM and the GUI/Visualisation program Modeller are available FREE of charge to approved users. However, there are some restrictions and conditions to this:

  1. There is a time limit on the code to ensure that users are using the latest release. (New versions of the numerical software will be made available before the expiry of any licence date occurs.)
  2. We require all users to register (so that we can advise of updates, bugs etc.).
  3. We require that users acknowledge CWR in any publications/reports.
  4. Users are not to modify, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or create derivative works based on the software. (Research partners are excluded from this requirement.)
  5. Users are not to rent, lease or transfer rights to the software.

The models can be used for commercial purposes, teaching and/or research. The for free version will not include all the current features that are under development at CWR until they are shown to be robust and reliable. Users of the for free version will have access to web-based documentation, technical support through the DYRESM User Group and will receive free update information and bug-fixes. Training and individual technical support is available on a fee for service basis.

We recognise that many applications require modification/adaptation of the code and that other research/teaching users will want to have access to the source code. We will continue to make the source code available to appropriate Research Partners under licence. These licences are based on the premise that the partner institution is primarily a research user and so will not be directly competing with our Contract Research Group. Where there is likely to be competition we encourage collaboration (we want to be partners). The motivation for us to give access to the source code is to increase the number of collaborative developers. We are committed to the ongoing development/enhancement of the models and want to see them applied to many different situations. We require our partners to exchange research results, applications and modifications and we try to include any improvements in the next release of the code; it is intended to be a true research partnership. Our Research Partners are our beta-testers, receiving the latest developments in the models.

If you would like to become a CWR Research Partner please contact CWR.

There are a few points that potential users should be aware of:

  1. The executable version are available for a limited number of platforms - Win32 (i.e., Windows) and Linux platforms. If you become a Research Partner we will provide you with source code, together with a small kernel of object code. (We will compile this kernel for Win32 or Linux, as required, so we may need to confirm that the compiler/linkers are compatible.) All programs are written in Fortran 95.
  2. The Graphical User Interface and Visualisation toolbox, Modeller, is written in the Java 2 programming language. This requires a Java 2 virtual machine to be installed (which is freely available from Sun at java.sun.com/j2se/downloads/). This Modeller supercedes the Modeller written in Matlab and is made available with all releases of DYRESM-CAEDYM from version 2.3.0 onwards.
  3. Modeller. However, the user will still require software to visualise the netCDF output file. You can find such software at the Unidata site.
