Environmental Engineering

Imberger, J.

Environmental Fluid Dynamics of Natural Systems: Transport and mixing process in catchments, rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal seas. Interest centres on the control these two processes impose on the biogeochemical systems active in the water column.

Regional Climate Change: The effect of changes in the transport and mixing in these natural systems due to regional climate change. In particular to ascertain whether these changes offer positive or negative feed backs to regional climate change.

Quantifying Sustainability: Determining quantitative measures for assessing sustainability and management strategies for natural systems. [more information]

Realtime Field Investigations in Physical Limnology

Marti, C.

Tertiary Motions in Natural Systems: Tertiary interactions are those motions that determine the net mass transport in a lake and it is these motions that provide the connection between transport and mixing processes and the biogeochemical processes that determine the health of a water body. As at this level not only two or three forces are in balance, but rather nearly all forces combine to determine the net mass transfer, and the dynamics are still amenable to resolution.

Adaptive Realtime Experimentation: A technique pioneered by CWR, is used to understand the third generation of transport and mixing processes in environmental surface waters. This methodology involves setting up numerical models simulating the scientific question being investigated and then running these in real time, comparing actual measurements with the numerical prediction and the adapting the experimental strategy to maximize the signal to noise for the question under investigation.
