Quantification of sustainability

This research thread aims to answer a simple question - how do we quantify sustainability? We may say we want to be sustainable, but how to we actually measure it, and demonstrate to ourselves that this is having an impact? CWR has recently developed a detailed methodology for quantifying sustainability that is applicable to many systems - from aquatic systems to man-made systems. This research is a continuing effort to ensure that resources allocated to sustainability are effectively applied.

Real-time management for short and long-term sustainability

CWR is at the forefront of developing real-time management systems for lakes and reservoirs. Coupled with the research on quantifying sustainability, it is now becoming clear that it is possible to actively manage systems in real-time for short and long-term sustainability. This theme employs multi-objective optimisation tools to deliver the most sustainable mode of operation of aquatic systems.

Integration of sustainability theory and engineering solutions

The final theme follows from the previous two, in that we are working towards integrating sustainability theory with engineering solutions in order to clearly demonstrate that systems and projects can be quantifiably shown to be sustainable.
