Water expert wins Western Australia's highest science honour

Professor Imberger is recognised and respected internationally for his water research as the Director of the Centre for Water Research at The University of Western Australia.

Under Professor Imberger's direction, the centre has developed technologies that are used world-wide by more than 2,000 institutions in over 50 countries.

Professor Imberger was one of seven winners announced by Mr Barnett at the Premier's Science Awards Gala Dinner last night.

The Premier said Professor Jorg Imberger was a remarkable scientist whose research into the hydrodynamic processes operating in coastal and inland waters had helped to influence national water policy.

Professor Imberger's research has benefited more than 100 million people globally through the technologies created at the Centre for Water Research, he said.

I congratulate all the winners of this year's Premier's Science Awards. Their contribution to science has helped nurture WA's culture of research and innovation.

The importance of science in the world cannot be overstated. Science is involved in many aspects of our existence and new scientific discoveries enhance the quality of life for all.

These awards create a sense of community pride and provide the opportunity to publicly celebrate, encourage and reward the State's best scientists, researchers, science teachers, science students and science communicators.

Mr Barnett also welcomed Emeritus Professor John de Laeter as a member of the Western Australian Science Hall of Fame. Inductees are appointed by the Premier in recognition for their long-standing commitment and outstanding contribution to science in the State.

Emeritus Professor John de Laeter's dedication to science has helped advance science education and influenced the direction of physical sciences research internationally,”he said.
