Ron is a geologist by training and has taught at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge in the UK, as well as Stanford, Caltech and Cornell as a visiting Professor. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He served as UK Chief Defense Scientist (1988-1993), Rector of Imperial College London (1993-2000), and Chairman of Shell (2004-2005) amongst other positions.
In 1999 Ron was appointed to the House of Lords of the UK Parliament. His current interests are climate change, energy policy and natural resources.
Ursula met Ron while rockclimbing at the University and this year they have been married for 50 years! She is a chemist and worked as a research assistant in Princeton University, then as an industrial chemist for ICI.
